TheatreLAB stands in solidarity with the local, national, and global protests in support of the
#blacklivesmatter movement and the overdue call to end racial inequality and police brutality in Richmond and beyond.
Starting Tuesday, June 9th, we will be opening our doors from 5-7pm every day as a place to meet, recharge from the heat, use the restroom, and drop off or gather supplies. The Basement is located at 300 E. Broad Street, downtown.
As suggested by protestors and local organizers - and in light of the recent decision to turn off lights at monuments during the evening - here are four ways you can work alongside us to provide continued support of this movement:
1) Donate supplies for free protest kits that include masks, water bottles, hand sanitizer, and high-protein snack packs.
2) Donate supplies for local organizers, including backpacks, rechargeable batteries, and portable lights and speakers.
3) Donate funds for us to purchase supplies for either of the above resources. [Click "DONATE" below; please add "BLM" in memo]
4) Donate your time to volunteer at The Basement to collect, organize, and distribute resources.
We have identified these tools through dialogue with protesters and local organizers as primary, tangible ways to support, and we hope to get these resources out as soon as possible. For protesters, it’s important to stay hydrated and prepared; for organizers, it’s important to be seen and heard. For anyone who may be unable to contribute in the ways listed above, we urge you to check the official Black Lives Matter website where you can find resources for other ways to join and support this movement. If you have any questions, please email TheatreLAB Artistic Director Deejay Gray at - we will continue to update our website and all social media outlets as we learn more or find more immediate ways to support this important movement.
