OBLIVION

As part of the LABlog, we're excited to share insight & ideas from the creative individuals crafting productions. In this installment- Jeffery Cole, Director of Oblivion, shares some thoughts.

This will be short, disjointed, and honest.

Faith is very personal to me. I tend to enjoy people who poke and prod the fundamentalist religious community; I am, however, acutely aware there are hypocrites and extremists on both sides of the secular vs. spiritual argument. For every Bill Mahr there is a Bobby Jindal, and for every Christopher Hitchens there is a Kirk Cameron.

One of my favorite memes: “Atheism is the belief that there was nothing and nothing happened to nothing and then nothing magically exploded for no reason, creating everything and then a bunch of everything magically rearranged itself for no reason whatsoever into self-replicating bits which then turned into dinosaurs. Makes perfect sense.”

That’s bananas! It’s also an oversimplification, which is what people tend to do when using extremist language.

Sometimes I direct using a German accent. I believe it spurs creativity.

I love watching actors work. It’s fascinating to see them do the math. How do they remember all those lines? Some actors record themselves, while others use reams and reams of paper to copy down their text. Some people need absolute silence and solitude to memorize, while I’ve heard of others who can take their scripts to a bar and get work done.

Everyone has a different process, but seeing the end result is always amazing.

One of the trickiest things I’ve encountered is how to take real people, give them a character, and then have them turn those characters into real people.

We are in the weirdest business.

Oblivion runs select dates starting Feb. 20th through March 7th at The Basement.
